Labuan Bajo, a fishing hamlet of fewer than 3,000 residents in 1995, now processes 140,000 annual visitors bound for Komodo National Park, a 1,733-square-kilometre archipelago of volcanic ridges and submerged caldera walls that shelter the world's largest surviving population of Varanus komodoensis.
Established as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991, the park spans 29 islands across the Sape Strait, where upwelling currents from the Indian Ocean collide with warmer Flores Sea waters to sustain over 1,000 fish species and 260 reef-building corals. The dragon population, estimated at 5,700 individuals across Komodo, Rinca, Gili Motang and Padar, descended from monitor lizards that rafted from Australia during Pleistocene low sea levels; males reach three metres and 90 kilograms, females half that mass.
The standard Komodo boat trip from Labuan Bajo operates as a pinisi cruise — traditional two-masted wooden schooners now fitted with engines and snorkel decks. Day trips cover 40 nautical miles round-trip to Rinca or Komodo, departing at dawn to reach ranger stations by 08:00 when dragons emerge to bask on volcanic sand. Multi-day itineraries add Padar's tricolour beaches (black, white, pink), Manta Point's cleaning stations where reef mantas circle year-round, and Kanawa's shallow coral gardens. Pink Beach, named for its Foraminifera-tinted sand, lies on Komodo's eastern shore; the hue comes from pulverised red coral skeletons mixed with white calcium carbonate.
Boat access is the sole transport to the park; no bridges or ferries connect the islands to Flores. The marine reserve's 1,214 square kilometres of protected ocean host whale sharks, dugongs, and seasonal blue whale migrations, while terrestrial zones sustain endemic Timor deer, wild boar, and 128 bird species. Ranger-guided treks on Komodo and Rinca follow established trails — short loops require 60 minutes, long circuits three hours across savannah and monsoon forest. The park's conservation fee, 250,000 rupiah per person per day, funds anti-poaching patrols and habitat restoration; illegal fishing and anchor damage remain primary threats to reef systems that generate 17 million dollars annually in dive tourism revenue.
